Sabah UMNO is confident of Barisan Nasional (BN) maintaining the state government’s administration in the upcoming 14th general election.
Its treasurer, Datuk Hajiji Noor, said this was based on the party’s performance and membership in the state.
He said Sabah had the highest UMNO membership, totaling more than 500,000 people.
“At our voter registration drive in the Tuaran district recently, we were able to register 2,000 voters with UMNO DNA. This shows that the party has a place in the people’s heart,” he said when at the UMNO General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre here today.
Currently, Sabah UMNO has 580,752 members, including 213,597 Wanita members, Youth (92,840 people) and Puteri (66,457 people).
Hajiji, who is also Sabah Minister of Local Government and Housing, said the presence of Parti Warisan, led by former federal cabinet minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, led by Datuk Lajim Ukin, only added colour to the state’s politics.
In the last general election in Sabah, BN won 22 of the 25 parliamentary seats, while DAP won two seats and the remaining seat by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
For the state seats, BN won 48 seats, PKR (seven), DAP (four) and Star (one).
