PAS on Thursday announced it will form a new opposition pact on March 16, making the group the third opposition bloc in the country.
Its secretary-general, Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, said the party would establish cooperation with another party to strengthen its position to face the next general election. He did not name the other party.
“We will be the third force. Our (PAS) constitution says we can collaborate with any party that shares our views and has a similar struggle,” he told reporters at the lobby of Parliament.
Takiyuddin said PAS remained a member of the three-party Pakatan Rakyat opposition bloc and worked with PKR but not with DAP or the Pakatan Harapan pact comprising DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara.
“Politics is not a one-way direction…it is a sort of coalition, consensus with political parties, but definitely not Pakatan Harapan,” he said.
Pakatan Harapan was formed by DAP, PKR and Amanah after DAP declined to cooperate with PAS within Pakatan Rakyat that also comprised PKR. Amanah was set up by several former PAS leaders after they lost in the party elections.
Takiyuddin, who is the MP for Kota Bharu, said the new bloc would bring about politics of maturity and prosperity.
